2023 Annual Meeting in Rapid City, South Dakota

The 2023 BioWRAP Annual Meeting was held in beautiful South Dakota on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines (SDSM). Team members in attendance include Graduate Students, Post Docs and Faculty from SDSM, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kansas State University. The conference was over three full days with two days on campus and a team collaboration day out in the field at Custer State Park. The first day kicked off with an ice breaker activity and then dove straight into project overview and outreach activities with K-12 youth, faculty family members enjoyed teaching the team how they would like to learn about BioWRAP, including viscosity, drainage, runoff and overall approach to their age groups.

The meeting sessions were intentional and included NSF Advance Grant Exercises, Evaluation Team Outcomes, Mentor Development for Faculty and Post Docs, and Workforce Development. The first afternoon of the meeting included detailed planning and sharing of each thrust objective by interdisciplinary collaboration. The day concluded with tours of Drs. Rajesh Sani and David Salem’s labs on the SDSM campus.

Day two of the conference kicked-off with an invigorating keynote by Dr. Prabhakar Clement, followed by Strategic Planning, Social Networking, and Setting Goals and Outputs for Years 2-4. The BioWRAP Leadership Committee and the External Advisory Board’s working lunch focused on sharing expertise and support between the teams. The afternoon brought together the collaborating and planning with presentations by each objective area, sessions with faculty related to Intentional and Inclusive Recruitment, a panel of Leadership Committee Members discussing Career Pathways and Work Life Balance. The final session of the day was a reception for the students and postdocs to showcase their research in a poster presentation at the SDSM Alumni Center.
